2006 Ben Donohoe Run and Walk For Fun

2006 Ben Donohoe Run and Walk for Fun

Hawker College Sports Administration did the Belconnen community proud on the11th of November when they hosted the 2006 Ben Donohoe Run and Walk for Fun around Lake Ginninderra. The run was held in honour of 9 year old Ben Donohoe who passed away last year from a brain tumour. Nearly 1400 people entered in the run and walk, well above last year’s total. The Donohoe family (Robyn, Pete, Luke, Lauren and Kate) were very happy with the day, thanking the Belconnen and ACT community for their wonderful support.

The Year 12 sports administrations students put in a great deal of time and effort to ensure that the event would run efficiently. We had nearly 400 registrations on the day, all of which were processed quickly and efficiently . A great sense of community was generated which had a positive impact on all that took part.

The feedback was extremely positive and we are sure that Ben would have been very proud to be honoured with such a successful event. We were able to raise over $17,000 all of which will go to the Pediatric Brain Tumour Research through the Brain Tumour Association of Australia. A very special mention should go to Ken Eynon from the ACT Cross Country Club who gave up a great deal of his own time to meet and advise our students in the lead up to the run and on the day. It would not have been nearly as successful without him.

Setting a new course record was Erwin McRea with a time of 17.58, closely followed by Anthony Haber 18:22 and third place and first placed Veteran was Stuart Doyle 19.43 (last year’s winner and Ex Hawker College student). The first female was Sarah Salmon 21:10, second female was Gillian Gordon 24.57, followed by Ruth Kennedy

Hayley Gosman from Hawker College was the first placed junior female 25.09 and Brett Robinson 20.22 was first junior male. First placed Veteran female was Linda Dianne Thomas with a time of 31.53

We would also like to everyone who helped make this event a success.

Gaining community support in the form of local sponsors has ensured that 100% of all entry fees and donations have gone to the Brain Tumour Association.
Special thanks to Telstra, Derek Kelly and Sons Printers, CISAC, MJ Plunkett Builders, Traffic Technologies, Starkis Design and the many businesses who donated goods and services. We are always looking for sponsorship and support, so if you are able to help please contact Hawker College on 62057744.

Thank you to all that supported and participated in this event. We aim to make this bigger and better next year. To help cater for the diverse population who are participating, a shorter 2-3 km alternative will also be run in 2007.
