Discover Belconnen

Belconnen is the second town centre of Canberra ACT. Development commenced in 1967 and by 2006 its population had reached 84,382. It is larger than many provincial cities in Australia.

Vital Statistics

At the 2006 Census conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (which has its headquarters in Belconnen) Belconnen's statistical profile was as follows:

  • 41,615 (49.3 per cent) of its population was male
  • 42,767 (50.7 per cent) of its population was female
  • median age of 34.0 years with 9.3 per cent of its people being 65 years and over
  • 73.2 per cent of its population were born in Australia
  • the median personal weekly income was $680.00 ($35,457.10 per year)
  • 69.2 per cent of dwellings were either owned, or being purchased, with 25.8 per cent being rented
  • the median monthly home repayment was $1,400 ($16,800) per year) and the median weekly rent was $250 ($13,035 per year)
  • 23.9 per cent of persons had a degree or higher qualification
  • Catholics were the largest religious group with 27.6 per cent , followed by Anglicans at 16.3 per cent then Uniting Church at 4.4 per cent. 23.3 said no religion

Belconnen's labour market - 2006 census

In 2006 Belconnen had 45,960 persons employed, 30,061 full time and 12,801 part time. The proportion of part timers was 27.9 per cent. The number unemployed was 1,727 and the unemployment rate was 3.6 per cent. The number of persons not in the Labour force was 18,048 and the labour force participation rate was 69.6 per cent.

Weetangara, Hawker, McKellar and Aranda have the highest median house prices in Belconnen. Median house prices in these suburbs are all over $600,000.

 

*What is a median? It divides a data set in two, as the median strip divides a road. One half the values are below it and one half above.

Major Institutions

Belconnen has a university, the University of Canberra, a campus of the Canberra Institute of Technology, the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra Stadium (home of the Canberra Raiders-RL, ARL premiers 1989, 1990 and 1994 and ACT Brumbies-RU, premiers Super 12 in 2001 and 2004!!!). Bruce Indoor Stadium and a major public hospital (Calvary).

Commercial

The centre of Belconnen is Lake Ginninderra, which has on its southern shore the Belconnen mall and a number of other retail premises.
